Head Coach - Scott Freischlag
Scott Freischlag enters his 16th year as head coach of the Wayne wrestling program with a career dual meet record of 143-29-3. Coach Freischlag is a 1981 graduate of Lewiston-Porter High School (Section VI). During his enrollment at Lew-Port, Freischlag enjoyed an outstanding wrestling and football career highlighted by being named All-State in football his senior year. Following high school, Freischlag competed for Division II Ashland College in football and wrestling, earning Heartland Conference runner-up honors as a freshman. After transferring to SUNY Cortland, Freischlag captured a SUNY title as heavyweight and was third place finisher in the NYS Collegiate Championships. Freischlag earned a Red Letter Award, recognizing him as the most outstanding wrestler on the Cortland team in 1985. After serving as an assistant coach in Ridgeway, New Jersey for three years, Freischlag took over the Wayne program from Chris Bourne. Wayne has experienced unprecedented success during his tenure. Wayne shared the Finger Lakes East title in 1995 and 1996, a period that saw the team have a two year record of 22-1-1. The 2000-2001and 2002-2003 teams ended their seasons with section V class "B" championships and the 2003-2004 and the 2004-2005 teams finished their seasons with a Class A championships. The 2004-2005 team was also the first Section Five team to defeat the Spencerport Team in 13 years. Freischlag's wrestlers have won 27 individual Class B championships, 13 individual Class A championships and eleven individual Section V titles during the past decade. Freischlag is a physical education teacher at Wayne Middle School and resides in Ontario with his wife Mary, daughters Ali and Kayla and son Kurt.
Assistant Varsity Coach - Ted Hargarther
Ted Hargarther is a veteran of the Wayne Central wrestling program. He has served as the junior varsity coach of the Eagles for 24 seasons, working for ten years with ex coach Chris Bourne and for the past fifteen seasons with Scott Freischlag. Ted is a 1976 graduate of Wayne Central. While in high school, he was an exceptional wrestler under the coaching of Dawson Raymo. Hargarther's outstanding high school wrestling career led to many victories and a county championship. Hargarther is known for his ability to teach fundamental wrestling skills and to evolve young grapplers into seasoned athletes. "Coach Hargarther is great at relating to our wrestlers." "He is particularly good at letting our younger guys know what is expected of them as well as what they need to do to be successful in this sport." "He is an ideal assistant coach." - Scott Freischlag. Coach Hargarther has been recognized for his dedication to the sport of wrestling by being selected as the 2003 recipient of the Terry Robert Justice Memorial Award. Junior Varsity Coach - Chris Moore
Chris Moore joined the Wayne Wrestling program in 2004 as the Jr. Varsity Coach. Coach Moore brings with him 7 years of Varsity Head Coach experience with Allegany - Limestone High School (NYS section 6 class AA). Under Coach Moore the Allegany program produced 14 individual Class AA Champions, 2 Section 6 state Reps, a 1998 Class AA Team Championship and numerous tournament team titles. Moore a graduate of West Irondequoit enjoyed a successful high school wrestling career. Chris Moore is a Biology and Earth Science teacher at Wayne High School.
Modified Coach - Brian Knebel
Brian Knebel a Technology teacher at Wayne High School has been the coach of the modified wrestling team since 2004. Coach Knebel was a high school wrestler at Honeoye Falls-Lima High School. In addition to wrestling Knebel played Soccer and Baseball for the Cougars. Coach Knebel has earned a masters degree in technology at SUNY Oswego.

Ron Gross is a 1986 Graduate of the Wayne
Central High School. While at Wayne Ron was a 4X Class B Champion and a 1986 New
York State Tournament Runner-Up. Ron
continued on with a successful college career including 4X NYS Team, 4X NCAA
Qualifier, 2X NCAA Division III All-American and Captain of 2X
NCAA Division III National Championship Team at Ithaca College. Ron was Inducted
into the Ithaca College Athletic "Hall of Fame" in 2004. Ron's
extensive coaching experience includes; Head
Coach @ Wesleyan University (CT) 1990-1992, Assistant Coach @ Ithaca College
1993, Head Coach @ RIT 1993-1997 (NYS College Coach of the Year in 1997),
Assistant Coach @ Wayne Central H.S. 1997-2001, Head Coach @ Brighton H.S.
2001-2005. This past
year Ron resigned from his coaching position with Brighton
to spend more time with his family and to help with the Wayne youth program of
which his sons wrestle in. Currently a social studies teacher at the
Twelve Corners Middle School in the Brighton School District, Coach Gross
resides in Walworth with his wife Lisa, daughter Carly and sons Trevor and
Tyler.
