Wayne Wrestling adds Luke Baum to Coaching Staff

Wayne head coach Scott Freischlag is pleased to announce the addition of Luke Baum to our coaching staff. Luke will replace Ted Hargarther, a long time assistant who will assume other duties within the program. Baum (Wayne, ‘05) enjoyed an outstanding high school career for the Eagles, culminating in a 4th place finish at the New York state tournament his senior year. Coach Baum concluded an excellent career at R.I.T. by earning 2009 NCAA All-American honors, placing fifth at 141 lbs., breaking his own school record for wins in a season (38), set as a first year standout in 2005 – 2006. He holds the R.I.T. record for most career wins with 146, which is among the top 20 all time in NCAA Division III history. Baum was the 2009 Empire 8 Conference champion and Most Outstanding Wrestler, a three time NCAA tournament qualifier, and a five time Empire 8 Athlete of the Week. In the classroom, he excelled, earning National Wrestling Coaching Association Academic All-American honors for three seasons while recording a 3.53 cumulative grade point average. Luke received his bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics and is currently pursuing teaching certification in the field of mathematics.

Coach Freischlag commented; “While I’m excited to have Luke join our staff due to his obvious technical knowledge and commitment to the program, I am really looking forward to the intangibles that he brings to the mat. Luke was on what I consider to be some of our greatest teams ever and understands the level of commitment it takes for individuals and teams to perform at that level. I am hopeful that he can help our wrestlers learn that there are no shortcuts to success in this sport and that only those who are willing to pay the price in training will achieve their goals.”

Dear Alumni and Friends of Wayne Wrestling,

Please join us on Thursday, May 27th as we dedicate the newly remodeled wrestling room at Wayne Middle School. The Wayne Wrestling Booster Club has made possible the creation of a Wall of Fame as the centerpiece of the upgrading of the training facility used by our entire wrestling program. We would like to have you as a guest of the booster club as we honor the tradition of excellence that is embodied in our wrestling program by dedicating the room to all of the past and current wrestlers of the program.

As you may realize, the Wayne Wrestling Booster Club continues to play an important role in the promotion and support of our wrestling team and its’ wrestlers. The booster club supports the pursuit of excellence in many ways, including paying for lodging as the team travels during the season. Please consider sponsoring a particular member of the Wall of Fame as a tribute to the commitment of that individual to our program and to the role the wrestling program has played in the development of countless young men.

We will also take the opportunity to celebrate several milestones in the history of the program, including:

*The 2009 -2010 season, which saw Wayne place 4th in the large school team standings at the New York State tournament. The post season saw tremendous success with Tory Cain (6th), Bob Dierna (4th),Vinny Digravio (3rd) placing at the New York State tournament and Al Dierna becoming Wayne’s 5th New York State Champion!

*Bob Dierna became the third NHSCA champion in the programs’ history by capturing the Junior Division crown in Virginia Beach, Virginia in March.

*Four time NCAA qualifier and All-American Josh Patterson completes his record setting career at SUNY Binghamton and will become Wayne’s first Division 1 wrestling coach when he joins Bucknell University as an assistant coach next fall.

*The contributions of Mr. Ted Hargarther to the wrestling program, including his career as a wrestler and as a coach.

April 18, 2010
By now most of us have received an email from Coach Hargarther advising us of his decision to step down as Assistant Varsity Coach.
Coach Hargarther a former wrestler for Wayne has held the assistants job for 27 years.
Coach Hargarther has been recognized by the Section V Wrestling community for his dedication to the sport of wrestling by being selected as the 2003 recipient of the Terry Robert Justice Memorial Award. Awards Photo
On June 7, 2005 The Wayne Wrestling Booster Club recognized Ted's 25 years of service to Wayne Wrestling with gift of silver plated wrestling shoes.

On behalf of all us who have been involved with Wayne Wrestling and especially the parents and wrestlers who you have helped to shape into fine young men, thank you for all you have done.

What an accomplishment to have ALL 4 WRESTLERS PLACE IN THE NYS TOURNAMENT and to have the WAYNE WRESTLING TEAM PLACING 4th at the NYS Wrestling Tournament out of all the high schools that attended!!!
This was a bunch of competitive kids that turned into more than just team mates – they practiced hard, fought hard, and stuck together – even when things got tough and has shown great sportsmanship throughout the season and beyond. Every wrestler should be very proud of the season they accomplished, with the tough competition and the drive to improve themselves after every win and loss.
Can’t wait until next season – going to be exciting!!! A lot of great returning wrestlers and new one’s that will carry on this great tradition at Wayne!
Thank you,
Wayne Wrestling Booster Club

Just want to let everyone know that Josh Patterson was the MOW in the Colonial Athletic Association tournament this past weekend. Josh has now qualified for the NCAA tournament 4 times and is  a returning All-American at 174. He defeated a wrestler (16 – 6) from George Mason who had defeated him a few weeks ago;  the guy made one mistake…………………he tried to rough Josh up….and it backfired! Congratulations to Josh (and his parents) and good luck at nationals!
